Aval Sweet Pidi Kozhukattai, Rice Flakes Kozhukattai

Since it's only a few days for Vinayakar/ Ganesh Chathurthi, I wanted to make a post about some kind of kozhukattai and made these aval/ rice flakes kozhukattais. I used red rice flakes ( slight thick variety ) to make them, and jaggery since this is a sweet version. It's a very easy recipe, the kozhukattais turned out very good, with the right amount of sweetness and flavor..

Need To Have

  • Red Rice Flakes ( Slight thick variety ) - 1 cup
  • Grated Jaggery - 1/2 cup
  • Moong Dal/ Husked Split Green Gram - 1 tablespoon
  • Grated Coconut - 2 tablespoons
  • Cardamom/ Elaichi - 3

Method

Dry roast the moong dal, wash and cook it with about 1/2 cup of water till it's cooked but holds its shape.

Melt the jaggery with 1 cup water, strain and add it to the cooked dal.

Then add the rice flakes ( washed and drained ) to the jaggery, bring it to a boil and cook it till the rice flakes are cooked and the mixture becomes dry.

Add the cardamom ( take the inner pods, crush and add ) and the coconut and mix it well. Cool this mixture, then using your hand make oval shaped balls, arrange it in greased idli moulds and steam it for 7 to 8 minutes. Remove, cool it slightly and serve.

Note
Don't overcook the dal, it should break when pressed between your fingers but not a paste.
The mixture should loose all the moisture but should be sticky, so that you can make balls with your hands.
